Yume Menghe Xu / 徐梦荷

PhD student in STEM Education at Tufts University.
Representative Director of Komatsu Summer School.

Born and raised in Liaoning, China. Lived in Tokyo, Japan for higher education and work.
Majored in Chemical System Engineering at The University of Tokyo, received B.Eng. and M.Eng.
Worked as founding staff of Komatsu Summer School - a liberal arts summer school aimed at high school students all over Japan. Currently serving as representative director.
Jumped into the education sector right after graduate school by realizing the importance of autonomy in learning by reflecting on the education received.
Designed and delivered numerous online/offline educational programs. Audience ranges from kindergarten children to adults in graduate school.
Attended and graduated from Fab Academy in 2020 by Professor Neil Gershenfeld from MIT. Currently exploring the potential of blending digital fabrication in education.
Triligual speaker of Chinese, English, and Japanese.

I enjoy using various media to make things.

GroceryBot

A robot that helps children learn about dataset building in machine learning.

Mini Salt Factory

An interactive chemical engineering learning tool that makes salt from ocean water, made almost from scratch.

Conductor Elmo

A proud member of Machine Orchestra in a Distance Society (MODS) where machines play ambient music together online.

CNC Plasma Cutter

A WIP project to make a CNC machine for plasma cutter, working together with a local welding workshop.

Teach

I explore new topics and ideas for STEAM workshop, designed and delivered in forms both online and offline, to different age groups.

Robot crafting (Arduino)

A series of workshops that introduces middle/high school students to electronics and programming by making robots using sensors and motors.

Art project made with p5.js

A series of workshops where middle/high school students create art project using p5.js.

Exploring the science of smell

One of the online workshops produced for 5-10 year old to explore the science of senses during the COVID-19 lockdown.

Commercial making for Minamiuonuma City

A 3 days camp where high school and university students gather to make commercials for a city.

LEGO Cupcake Factory

A series of workshops where children learn about process and system by building a cupcake production line using LEGO.

Pocket Game Creator

A series of workshops where children make games on an OLED screen.

Apps UI design

I worked at WonderLab Inc. as a content director and project manager, where I directed content design for educational apps.

Code Crafters - Band & Studio

A block-based music making app content to understand the possibility of self-expression through programming.

Code Crafters - Adventure Quest

A series of games where children acquire the fundamental literacy of programming through block-based programming.

Sokkuri Sagashi

A game to spot similarities between 2 images to develop children’s abstract thinking.

Medal Maneuver

A mini game in Think!Think! that develops children’s critical thinking skills.
